Ancient town situated on a hill at 160 metres above sea level, and surrounded by splendid hills covered in vines and olive groves. It is still surrounded by a well-conserved wall dating back to the 12th century. The buildings include the council palace, Palazzo comunale and civic tower, Torre civica which bears the Malatestiano stem on its facade with the winged dragon, emblem of Saltara. Worth mentioning are the ancient indoor markets: a road of porticos which has hosted the market since 1489, by concession of the Malatesta lords. The elegant Villa del Balì, on the hills of Saltara, dates back to the 17th century and gained its current look in the 18th century. The villa now hosts one of the most well-known museums in the territory: the Planetarium and Interactive Science museum.
