MONTEMAGGIORE AL METAURO

This town of medieval origin is situated on a hill which dominates the luxuriant Metauro valley. It is connected with a particularly famous battle which took place in 1944 when the allies and the German troops confronted each other along the well-known Gothic Line. In commemoration of this event the historic museum of Winston Churchill, Museo Storico del fiume Metauro Winston Churcill, has been set up and contains a collection of photographs, written documentation, diaries, official documents, military relics and outfits of that time, thus preserving the memory of the events which marked the history of the previous century. The hills below the village which stretch for miles in the surrounding areas are well-known for the production of an excellent quality wine, the Bianchello Doc del Metauro. The town has been awared the title of Città del Vino (city of wine).
